Miss Cruickshank was my favourite teacher. Her class was always fun and interesting. I loved that she never put up with an B.S. I was bullied most of high-school and while most teachers ignored & turned away she always put a stop to it & stood up to my bullies whenever she witness it. I hope she is resting in peace and living her best authentic life.

MAC was an amazing teacher and mentor.
I was in her Grade 10 Media and History class as a student. Her flair of bringing the past to the present was inspiring. Everyday she would stand at her podium, with her Toronto Star in hand and read us the obits.
This was her way of showing us that ordinary people made remarkable journeys, incredible inventions and could yet walked humbly among us. This led to my love of Obituaries, I check them everyday, Crossword puzzles and creating connections with with our past. Every time I drive by Cruickshank Park or CKNX, I think of the stories MAC would share with us. She also tried to teach me that Animal Farm was a political satire, and I debated that it wasn't possible, because Animals could not talk. She loved to share stories of her family. Her pride was evident.
As a coworker, it took a few years to transition from Miss Cruickshank to MAC. As an adult she fostered my love of politics and unionism and encouraged me to join our local. This lead to many years serving with OSSTF and eventually finding my way into studying HR at the post secondary level. For that, I will always be indebted to her. Maybe someday I'll go back to teachers college, so I can be as inspiring as she was.
Her stubbornness, dedication and kind fierceness shaped many Mustangs over the years and we are all better people for her dedication. She'd be pleased to know that I did not use AI to write this, all grammatical errors and spelling mistakes are mine.
Old school fundamentals are alive an well.
Thanks you MAC :)

My condolences to the family for your loss. Ms. Cruikshank was one of my favourite teachers in high school and to this day I will always stop to watch "The Color Purple" when it is on and look for the "symbols" she taught us of so long ago.

To say that she was a life changing teacher would be an understatement. I was in high school during a time where there was rampant homophobia in Huron county, and any message I got from teachers that it’s ok for people like me to be myself is something I remember to this day. Although I was too scared to be authentic at the time, her instruction and messages really helped me in university. The impact that great teachers make extends far beyond the classroom. She was a truly incredible person who stood up for what she believed in.

Heather your words and sentiments are so powerful and appreciated. Mary Ann stood up for others, more often than herself and she truly cared about all of her students. Her heart was on her sleeve….
Your kindness would be appreciated, more than I can say, by Mary Ann. Thank you

I was also a neighbour! We grew up beside her on Centre St in Wingham and enjoyed many a chat. We always just called her “Mary Ann” (which was kind of rebellious because it was insisted by my parents to call her Miss Cruikshank!). I was caught at Madill by shouting out HI MARY oops!!! lol. The street just wasn’t the same after she moved. I’m so very sorry for your loss! She will be missed and remembered fondly!!

To all of the family,
My condolences to you all. I grew up with Mary Ann on Victoria Street in Wingham and remember her fondly.
The 50's,60's and 70's were wonderful years with fun times, CKNX events, summer swimming in the river and the unique Wingham downtown and area. I was amazed to hear of all her students who were taught by her. I am sure she was a great teacher.
Even though I have Iived out west now for many years I have fond memories of growing up across Victoria street from her.

Ms. Cruickshank was an amazing person. We, my group of friends (whoever was there at the time), and her would have numerous conversations even though she was never my teacher. She touched more lives than she ever knew. May her life become the stories that are passed on to future generations - therefore becoming the History and English she loved to teach.

We offer our sympathy to Ellen, Steve, Kate and all of Mary Ann’s special nieces and nephews. Treasure your memories of a special sister and aunt. For many years I worked with Mary Ann at Madill. She was a constructive force in the lives of the students and teachers in the school. Mary Ann was very good at listening before she spoke; a good habit in both the classroom and staffroom. During her term as Federation President of our District, Mary Ann demonstrated her considerable leadership abilities. During the NFL season, Monday mornings in the staffroom were always an interesting place to be. On a great many of these mornings, Mary Ann was there to collect her winnings from the week-end football pool. Her knowledge and understanding of professional football made her a very frequent winner. At Madill, we are proud to claim her as one of us.

To the entire Cruickshank family.
Mary Ann was one of a kind. Not in her presence often but when I was I truly enjoyed her sense of humour. OSSTF was a place where her dedication and intelligence was evident and my father thought very highly of her.
Living in the “Cruikshank house” was a great transition from farm life for my parents.
Please accept my sincere condolences..I know her health challenges often made life difficult.
Rest easy, great lady.

I don't have vivid memories of all my secondary school teachers, but I certainly do have them of Ms. Cruickshank. She was truly one of the greats: obviously passionate about teaching, engaging, and treated every student with respect regardless of whether they were top of the class or didn't seem to want to be there. She didn't just communicate information to us, but encouraged us to think. Now that my own children are starting to enter the secondary school years, I certainly hope they get to have some teachers as great (or even close to as great) as Mary Ann. My condolences to the family for this tremendous loss.

What a loss.. one of the good ones gone too soon. I loved taking history courses with Miss C. She would discuss current world news at the beginning of each class.. and because of her, I truly loved taking history courses. Her dry sense of humour kept us on our toes. I’ll always look back on that time fondly! A great teacher, great person, and a great loss. So sorry to her family & all of those who loved her. She will be deeply missed.
