Obituary of Janet E. Mathers

Peacefully, at Queensway Manor Nursing Home, on Friday, January 10, 2014, Mrs. Janet Mathers of Wingham age 97 years. Beloved wife of the late Melville Mathers (1995). Dear mother of Arnold and Ila (Pengelly) Mathers and Evelyn and Jim Gaunt all of Exeter. Cherished grandmother of Janet Gaunt and Cliff McGuire, Dwayne and Debbie Mathers, Lorrie Mathers and Nathalie LaForest and Suzanne Mathers and Brian Horner. Great-grandmother of Jacqueline McGuire (Jeff), Calli Elliott (Ryan), Brent Mathers (Amanda), Blake, Kyle, Melanie, Sarah and Jonathon Mathers and Justin, Brock and Drew Horner. Also survived by 7 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Sister-in-law of Jean Mathers of Brussels. Predeceased by brothers Walter (Mary) and Bill Woods, and brother-in-law Charlie Mathers. Janet was the only daughter of Sam and Jane Woods and grew up on the ninth concession of Turnberry Township. She graduated from Wingham High School and Stratford Normal School (Teacher's College). Janet married Melville in 1937 and lived in Morris Township. Janet farmed, taught school and was a social worker. She loved to travel and often spent winters in Florida. She was a painter, knitter, a historian, an avid reader and a role model for all of her family. Janet was also member of the Knox United Church in Belgrave. Visitation at McBurney Funeral Home Ltd., Wingham, Ontario on Sunday, 2:00-6:00 pm. Funeral service will be held at the funeral home chapel on Monday at 3:00 pm. Elly Dow officiating. Interment in Wingham Cemetery, Wingham, Ontario. Memorial donations to Habitat for Humanity Huron County or Knox United Church, Belgrave would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
