To the Szarek Family:
George Szarek had a truly memorable and important impact on my life. George and Dawn moved in across from our home on Hamilton St. in Blyth. My father, Kazimierz "Kozzy" Kuchmistrz, was a friendly neighbour who introduced himself to George, and he then discovered that they shared a Polish heritage. My Dad sent me over to “help” him out with the construction of his first house in Blyth, but I don’t think having a 10 or 11 year old kid underfoot was any real “help!” Within about five years, George decided to build a new and larger red brick house next door to his original white siding bungalow. I had been spending my previous summer holidays learning from George how to do basic car maintenance like changing oil, spark plugs and even brake shoes. So now, I had a chance to “help” again with electrical wiring, plumbing and even carpentry too, although I was a rather puny kid and couldn’t nail anything quickly. George was always very patient and explained how to do things in a way that made sense- I could see why he was a great teacher. I remember clearly, when I was helping him build a tool shed and a backyard deck, and I was too particular about doing some task perfectly, George would look at me and say: “You know, we’re not building the Taj Mahal here!” I had to go to my encyclopaedia to figure one this out, but it made me laugh because he’d regularly repeat it over the next couple of years whenever I helped him at his rental buildings or with a car repair, and got into my “perfection mode.”
I count myself very fortunate to have had the luck to learn these practical skills from George, he was a mentor who gave me confidence to work with my hands. It’s something I’ve never forgotten, and I amaze my friends today that I am “handy” and can do ceramic tiling, install pipes, sinks, toilets and plumbing fixtures, do the wiring for switches (even two way!), and basic car maintenance too. I just did my own contracting and many renovations on my townhouse here in Vancouver from 2016-2018, and I thought of George almost every day. He was also the first person to help me understand the stock market and kindled a love of politics in me that has never left me. George and Dawn took me on trips to Kitchener and even once to Detroit, which opened up my small town world for me. I am really, really sad that he has passed away, and especially that I didn’t have a chance in the last few years to tell him personally how much he meant to me in my life.
Good-bye George….you were a great friend.

Dear David, Andrea, Andrew, and Amanda,
I was saddened to hear of George's passing. With moving out West to BC for 12 years, I lost touch with George. We recently moved back to the province now, but over in Ottawa. I won't be able to attend the service tomorrow but want you to know our thoughts will be with you.
I know Mom has already spoken about the closeness our two families. Lots and lots of time was spent together in the ups and downs of life. I remember much time spent in laughter, especially about shenanigans that went on.
My favourite George memory occurred on one of our Spring Break trips south. I was in my teens and we were in Tampa that year. We decided one afternoon to spend time at Busch Gardens. We arrived in time to get into the park at a discount because it was later in the day. I'm not sure if it was planned that way but I wouldn't be surprised knowing that George was always one who could get in on a deal! Anyway, I wanted to go on some rides and George did too so we split up from the rest of the group. We had only been in on a couple of rides when it started pouring rain. Park patrons disappeared pretty quickly but the rides were still open. George and I ran from one ride to another, in the pouring rain, getting our fill. There were no long snaking lines to wait in, we just went from one ride to another. We certainly got our money's worth that day! It brings a smile to my face just thinking about George's enthusiasm as we ran through the rain and the fun we had together. That's my best memory and one I will cherish.
Thanks Dawn and George for treating me as part of your family. Your lives will not be forgotten.
Sending love,
Becky, Todd and family

I had the pleasure of teaching with Dawn for many years at Howick Central. Loved her sense of humour. She was a great friend.
George always made me feel welcome when I went to visit them. She always spoke kindly of her niece and nephew.
They had a good life together and are now together again.

David, Andrea, Andrew and Amanda,
We have happy memories too many to mention of adventures with Dawn and George. Trips to Florida, Friday nights at the Park House, Saturday drives to Kitchener market, many buffet meals, and card games shared, golf games played, birthdays celebrated, etc., etc. They treated our Becky as their own little girl. Dawn was a very kind, creative, and caring elementary teacher. George was a shop teacher at FE Madill and a consummate “fixer”. He could fix cars, plumbing, electrical and build almost anything.
Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. Sincere condolences and love.
Paul, Marilyn and Becky Elgie

I taught with Geoge for many years and have fond memories of time spent with him. I often golfed with George when I was just starting out and he gave me good golf advice which was in order to improve my game I should bet more money than I had in my pocket on the game. I also recall the time George's picture was on the front page of the Toronto Star Business Section where the president of Ford Canada had his finger in George's face. George had challenged him at a share holder's meeting. I will miss George

To the Szarek family:
I had the complete pleasure of being on staff with Dawn at Wingham Public School and learned what a kind caring person she was to all who she came in contact with. George would stop in often at the end of his teaching day and was also a great person to know. May they rest in peace together, having made the world a better place for having been here.
Sincerely Barb Nicholson
